There are 2 general types of skills, which go by different names.

Both are equally important when it comes to getting and keeping a job.

1. Soft skills are also referred to as “professional skills” and “employability skills.”

These skills are needed in almost every single workplace.  Examples: Be on time, work well as part of a team, work independently, communicate effectively, think critically, etc.)

2. Hard skills are also referred to as “technical skills.”

Sometimes these skills are very specific to a profession or workplace, but not always.  Examples: Use excel or other computer programs, drive a car, file papers, muck a horse stall, etc.)

3. Transferrable skills are technical or professional skills that can be used in more than one environment. 

Examples:  The ability to measure things is a hard skill, which can be used in a lot of different places and jobs (in a home or commercial kitchen, at a science lab, on a carpentry site, in a frameshop, etc.).  The ability to manage time is a soft skill, which can help you achieve your goals at home and in the workplace.
